If you’re a long suffering theater kid, you’ll love this movie. If you’re not, you’ll finally understand us.
Lady Bird
If you still can't stop thinking about Barbie, then take a walk through Greta Gerwig’s body of work, starting with none other than the coming-of-age film of our generation: Lady Bird. A love letter to everyone with mommy issues and a desire to rewrite their entire life story, Lady Bird is just that film.
Fire Island
Fire Island is what you get when a Jane Austen character does poppers. Probably Hulu’s best comedy of 2022, this film comes from the mind of comedian Joel Kim Booster, who also stars alongside Bowen Yang, Conrad Ricamora, James Scully, and Margaret Cho–and special mention for the hilarious duo of Matt Rogers and Tomás Matos. The plot is a modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and a fun watch for any English major, Las Culturistas listener, or drag brunch regular.
Another Round
This Danish black-comedy follows four teachers who test the limits of blood alcohol content in the hopes of reaching their most creative, relaxed states. The film stars Mads Mikkelsen and took home an Oscar for Best International Feature Film in 2021.
Amsterdam
This criminally underrated 2022 film stars Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, and John David Washington as three friends who get caught up in a conspiracy theory regarding the murder of a retired army general. We could say a lot more, but we’ll just say this. Amsterdam features Taylor Swift—the actress.
The Banshees of Inisherin
Less slapstick comedy, and more playwright comedy, The Banshees of Inisherin stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two men on a remote island off the coast of Ireland enduring a one-sided friendship breakup. Irishmen, they’re just like us.
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Did someone say the best movie of 2023? Hulu claimed the streaming rights to Everything Everywhere All at Once, which delivers on laughs, tears, and everything in between. Honestly, what can we say about this masterpiece that hasn’t already been said?
Not Okay
This 2022 satire stars Zoey Deutch (a Hulu fave) as an influencer who gets caught in her lies alongside a tatted and bleached Dylan O’Brien in a new role: f*ckboy.
Big Time Adolescence
This coming-of-age comedy follows a teenager who spends his time hanging out with his sister’s ex-boyfriend, a 23 year old who doesn’t have his shit together. They start working together to sell drugs at high school parties and, of course, things don’t go according to plan.
The Disaster Artist
Starring Seth Rogen, The Disaster Artist satirizes the production of the 2003 film The Room, considered by many to be the worst film ever made.
The Little Hours
Starring Allison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, and Dave Franco, The Little Hours follows three nuns trying to bone a gardener. If you haven’t seen this movie, are you really an Aubrey Plaza fan?
I Love My Dad
This catfishing comedy follows a desperate father looking to connect with his son via social media...by impersonating a young woman who catches his son’s eye. The film stars Patton Oswalt, Claudia Sulewski, and James Morosini, who wrote and directed the film based on his real life experiences (yikes).
Buffaloed
Zoey Deutch plays a charismatic con artist named Peg in this comedy. After finding herself in a little bit of trouble—and a lot of debt—she decides to become a debt collector herself.
Hurricane Bianca
Fans of drag, approach the stage. A new cult classic for anyone with charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent, Hurricane Bianca stars Roy Haylock (aka Drag Race champion Bianca del Rio) as a teacher who moves from New York to Texas. The plot here gets foreboding as our main character gets fired from his school after being outed in the small town.
Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn
This Romanian dramedy follows a teacher whose marital sex tape is uploaded to a public porn site, forcing her to deal with the revenge porn ramifications. This film pokes a little bit of playfully provocative fun at many of the -isms; sexism, nationalism, consumerism, and for a little bit of spice, COVID-induced stress.
Palm Springs
Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti star in this rom-com as two people stuck in one of those infinite time-loop situations you might have heard about. Basically, they wake up every day on the day of a wedding they’re both attending—a waking nightmare.
Little Miss Sunshine
Dark comedies are great comedies, and Little Miss Sunshine is one of the best. Starring Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Steve Carrell, Paul Dano, Abigail Breslin, and Alan Arkin, the film follows a dysfunctional family on a road trip to a children's beauty pageant. Breslin plays the competing pageant girl, Dano plays the edgy and mute older brother, and Carrell plays Uncle Frank, along for the ride after a failed suicide attempt. Laugh when you can’t cry.
On the Count of Three
Part comedy, part drama, part thriller, On the Count of Three is one of those films that packs it all in. Starring Jerrod Carmichael (who also directed it) and Christopher Abbott, this film follows two friends who opt to spend their last day on Earth together before dying by suicide. We know, it doesn’t sound funny at all, but with Carmichael and Abbott at the helm, it somehow is.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
A movie that has gotten better with time, Popstar is a mockumentary from Saturday Night Live’s The Lonely Island. A predecessor to The Other Two, Popstar is very obviously based on Bieber fever, with Andy Samberg playing a child prodigy pop-rapper.
